Studies on the Chlorine Demand and Chlorination of Well-and Pump-waters in Shindong Area Kangwon Province

Abstract
To gather information on chlorination as one means of insuring sanitary water supply in rural areas, a study was conducted from May 27-July 7, 1973, involving the examination of water from 97 wells and pumps in one part of Shindong township, Chunsung county, Kangwon province. The results of the study, which included measurement of water temperature, pH, chlorine demand and residual chlorine, were as follows :
1. The water temperature of samples from the wells was 24.3¡É, while that of samples from the pumps was 14.5¡É. The highest temperature recorded was 15.7¡É (Saam 1 ri) and the lowest was 12.4¡É (Shinchon 2 ri).
2. pH ranged from 6.0¡7.3, averaging 6.5 (slightly acidic).
3. The average chlorine demand was 0.7 ppm for wells and 0.4ppm for pumps. Shinchon 1 ri, had the highest demand at 1.4ppm, while Hakgok 2 ri had the lowest at 0.1 ppm.
4. Of the 97 states examined, 23(23.7%) had residual chlorine one day after treatment, while 3 sites (3.1%) showed traces of residual chlorine two days after treatment. Of the sights which yielded residual chlorine one day after treatment, 15(65.2%) had 1.0 ppm of less and 21(91.3%) had 3ppm or less, all three sites with residual chlorine after two days had 1 ppm or less.
5. Residual chlorine was highest at Hakgok 1 ri, with 3.5 ppm, while at Hakgok 2 ri, there was no residual chlorine at all.
6. There was no statistically significant difference between the residual chlorine in the pump samples and that in the well samples (¥ö©÷=0.0856, p>0.05).
